| I was wondering what was the incidence of cancer, and what kinds of cancer, that are common in the High Desert. |

Why, should we be concerned? Is there something in the water? |

| I don't know if there's something in the water, in the air, whatever. I was just curious to see if there are high cancer occurrences in the high desert environment. I know a disccussion board probably wouldn't be the best place to find this information, but it's a start. |

I personally don't know anyone up here with cancer. My husband works with a young guy who's girl friend just found out she has uterine cancer. She's only 22. |

I forgot! I thought I had done that when I first signed up, months ago. I come and go, lots of sites to visit on the Net. |

| A friend of mine just found out she has cancer all through her cervix, uterus and ovaries. She has to have chemo, radiation and then a total hystorectomy. Don't ask me why in that order. She's only 33. |

That's really tough, clover. I hope she sails through, and they get all of it. My sister-in-law was diagnosed with cancer when she was 32. She lived in the high desert most of her life.

| My mother died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 42. She lived up here for 15 years before she passed away. |

Thank you. Yeah my friend has been through a lot. She lost her husband a year ago last January to cancer also. This cancer thing really bites. I'm waiting for test results myself. My nerves are shot between the two of us.... Sorry to hear about your Mom "sassy". |

Sassy,
that's terrible - she was way too young. An uncle of mine passed away from the same thing at about 50, it runs in his family. |

That's what they say, but I don't entirely believe it - unless it's a "new" thing.
I come from a HUGE family line - Mom had 12 siblings, and numerous cousins, - who most went on to produce huge families themselves. - so many relatives we can't count them all. I have first cousins as old as my Mom, and second cousins old enough to be my parents. Dad's side wasn't as large, but there are many relatives on that side too.
My son lived up here in the late 70's and early 80's.
He was diagnosed with leukemia after living up here.
My sister died of breast cancer at the age of (barely) 39. She lived up here for several years also (in her younger years before she married and had 5 kids)
My brother's grandkid was diagnosed with malignant tumors at the base of her skull about a year+ back. (They never lived up here, - but would occasionally visit)
However - of ALL those "other" relatives on Mom and Dad's sides of families, not a single ONE of them has been diagnosed with any form of cancer.
Go figure.
I guess the question would be, what causes the cells to mutate in the first place? I think it has more to do with something other than "genetics", as "they" would like us to believe. But that's just the way my brian opperates.
Anyway, I hope that answered your question. LOL! |

| I never knew of anyone, but was extremely concerned as I walked thru George AFB, wondering why all of that vacant housing wasn't put to gooduse, and then saw all of the signs warning of cancer & contamination in the area. |

You should be careful about being out in the sun, also. I think there is a lot of skin cancer up here in the desert.
The several times I have been to our dermatologist, his waiting room is always full.
Melanoma is a very dangerous skin cancer. If you get it and it is not discovered, it can spread to other parts of the body.
I dont know much about it except some years back a cousin of mine died from it because she had let it go too long. She had a large dark mole on her back and did nothing about it because it did not show and did not hurt.
It was only when her bra hooks began to rub on the mole and it bled once or twice and ruined a brand new fancy blouse that she had just bought that she decided to see a doctor about it.
Altho the mole was removed and also some lymph glands, it had apparently already spread to other organs.
I think if you look up Skin Cancer on the computer you can find out more about the different kinds.
I have had a couple of little 'things' removed from my face and my arm that did not seem important to me, but when I showed them to the dermatologist, he said" humm", and took biopsies and then removed them. So far, so good.
But I stay out of the sun. |

| Thats scary information. Thanks! I've been meaning to have a tiny mole on my left arm checked out but after several years haven't done it yet. |

| Hello! my mom died of pancreatic cancer 1 year and 5 months after moving to the hi dez. My dad just had skin cancer removed from his arm. It literally popped up over night. He thought it was a boil it was so fast. Basal or squamous cell carcinoma-but again skin cancers and sun go hand in hand. |
